The Devil May Cry series of video games, which has been around since 2001, has long been ripe for any sort of adaptation to the big or small screens, thanks to its charismatic, wise-cracking hero Dante and his love of fighting demons in cinematic fashion. But, aside from a lone season of anime released in 2007, nothing has materialized — a Hollywood movie version was greenlit a few years after that, but the announcement was both the first and last word we ever got on that project. But now, finally, Netflix is stepping in to fill this void with Devil May Cry, a new animated series.

Coming in 2025, Devil May Cry hopes to fit neatly within Netflix's nice niche of animated shows for adults based on video games that includes stuff like Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners and Castlevania. For more on what to expect from this new TV adaptation of Devil May Cry, read on.

Devil May Cry animated series latest news

As part of its mega-dump of marketing for its 2025 slate of shows and movies, Netflix dropped the full opening credits sequence for Devil May Cry — and the theme song, delightfully, is Limp Bizkit's "Rollin'." Solid.

Devil May Cry animated series release date

All eight episodes of this first season of Devil May Cry will drop on Netflix on April 3.

Devil May Cry animated series cast and crew

The Devil May Cry television series is created by Adi Shankar — best known for producing both Castlevania and Captain Laserhawk, also Netflix animated series based on video games — and written by Alex Larsen (Bodied). Despite the rather imminent release date, the only member of the voice cast we know is Johnny Yong Bosch, who will voice Dante.

Bosch is a very interesting choice for Dante, because in the games he actually voices Dante's nephew Nero, while Reuben Langdon provides the voice of Dante. That might cause a little bit of whiplash for fans of the series, but it's possible there's a story reason for this. Since series antagonist Vergil is Dante's twin brother and Nero's father, it could be that the plan is for Bosch to voice all three of them. But that's just speculation. Nero didn't even show up for the first time until the fourth game, so he may not even be in this series... yet.

The animation is produced by the animators at Studio Mir, which is best known for producing X-Men '97 for Marvel and Harley Quinn for DC, as well as the 2024 animated Watchmen film.

Devil May Cry animated series plot and story

Devil May Cry follows the adventures of the demon hunter Dante as he runs afoul of all sorts of supernatural forces and organizations, which he usually deals with using his dual pistols and smart sword. The series is full of Catholic-esque iconography — Dante's name is even a reference to Dante Alighieri, author of The Divine Comedy. So it's not far removed from, say, the Keanu Reeves film Constantine, at least in terms of subject matter.

But Dante isn't some smoldering serious guy like John Constantine was in that movie — instead, he's a wise-cracking smartass on top of being a badass with a big sword. Expect a fun and flippant tone.

Devil May Cry animated series teaser trailer

We have a pair of rather beefy teasers — the first being a proper trailer, and the second is a first look at the opening credits, with "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit as the very surprising-but-we're-not-complaining theme song. Check it out.
