The Star Trek universe is expanding once again with Star Trek: Section 31, a new movie starring Academy Award winner (and certified icon) Michelle Yeoh. After her performance in Wicked, Yeoh's talent turns the spotlight on Emperor Philippa Georgiou, who steps into a clandestine Starfleet division to defend the galaxy against an unexpected and mysterious threat.
Launching exclusively on Paramount+ on Jan. 24, this film delivers a darker, more intense take on the Star Trek saga. Time to mark your calendars.
Star Trek: Section 31
Paramount+Set in the franchise's "lost era" — the time between The Original Series and The Next Generation — Section 31 bridges a gap in Star Trek lore. The storyline picks up after the events of Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, with Georgiou now marooned in the Prime Universe and taking on a pivotal new role. While her character's journey began as the noble Captain Philippa Georgiou in Discovery's pilot, she later returned as the ruthless Emperor from the Mirror Universe. Now, this layered and morally complex character is recruited into Starfleet's shadowy espionage wing, adding a thrilling new chapter to her story.
Behind the scenes, there's an intriguing story about how this show came to be. During Yeoh's time on Star Trek: Discovery, she proposed the idea of a spinoff focused on Georgiou to executive producer Alex Kurtzman. Her passion for the character — and her desire to inspire young Asian women through this strong, multifaceted role — helped pave the way for Section 31.
Now, Section 31 offers a new tone for the Star Trek franchise, leaning into espionage, intrigue, and moral complexity while staying true to its sci-fi roots. With its exclusive on Paramount+ on Jan. 24, fans won't have to wait long to see Yeoh reprise the role and explore this bold new direction in Star Trek storytelling.
The film will premiere on Paramount+ on Jan. 24. If you're not a Paramount+ subscriber, pricing starts at $7.99/month or $59.99/year. This includes some commercial interruptions and access to over 40,000 shows and movies plus live sports. Subscribers who want a little more can opt for the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME plan, which costs $12.99/month or $119.99/year. This will get users access to SHOWTIME and some live TV.
