One of the signature moments of the Bible is getting the streaming TV treatment with Prime Video's new series, House of David.

If you are wondering, yes, the David in the title is the one of David and Goliath fame. But as with all good tales that stand the test of time and religious scrutiny, there is more to the story than just good overcoming evil, the weak overcoming the strong. The new series comes as faith-based stories like The Chosen and Sound of Freedom have exploded in popularity on TV and in theaters, giving rise to this new genre of big-budget, prestige religion projects.

Could House of David go down in history with those other projects as the leaders of the movement? Here's everything to know about Prime Video's House of David.

More on Amazon Prime Video:

What is House of David about?

Before the series tackles the story of how a young David takes down Philistine giant Goliath in battle with only a sling and stones, it seems audiences will see the origin of the young man behind that legend. According to Prime Video, House of David will chart the fall of one leader and witness the ascension of another.

When the once-mighty King Saul of Israel falls victim to his own pride, God directs the prophet Samuel to anoint David, an outcast teenager, as his successor. But in his new role atop the hierarchy of an unforgiving nation, David finds himself on a journey to discover his destiny, navigate love, weather loss, and confront extraordinary violence in his own court, all while taking the throne. For those behind on their history lesson, David is considered one of the most revered kings of Israel and Judah, and the third king of the United Monarchy.

House of David release date

Prime Video announced that House of David will premiere in 240 countries and territories on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025, with three episodes available at launch. Additional episodes will roll out weekly afterward.

House of David images

In officially announcing the series' release date, Prime Video released eight first-look photos showing off the epic scale of House of David. Perhaps the most recognizable image in the photos is David launching his signature stone and sling at, presumably, an off-screen Goliath. The giant isn't left to your imagination though, as he makes an appearance in the photos as well, dressed in battle armor and towering over those near him. The most well-known name in the series, Stephen Lang, best known for his villainous turn in the Avatar films, can also be seen anointing David at God's direction, a pivotal moment in the young man's future.

House of David production

House of David went into production in Greece in 2024, a picturesque shooting location but quite different from the Valley of Elah near Bethlehem where David and Goliath's battle took place in the Bible.

One big question that many will have is whether the epic series has any ties to The Chosen, the mammoth hit series about the story of Jesus that has played on TV and in theaters. House of David hails from Wonder Project, which counts among its stakeholders Dallas Jenkins, the creator and producer/director of The Chosen. So it is not far removed from that success story.

The series is based on an idea by Jon Erwin, who leads Wonder Project and has directed films like Jesus Revolution. He is credited alongside Jon Gunn, the director of the Hilary Swank-starrer Ordinary Angels, as the "visionary filmmakers" behind House of David.

House of David cast

Prime Video conducted a four-month international search for the right actor to step into the tunic of David, one of the most-renowned figures from the Bible. They found their guy in Michael Iskander, who Broadway fans may know from the original cast of the Tony Award-winning musical, Kimberly Akimbo, in which he played Aaron Puckett. When the news of his casting was announced, Iskander posted on his Instagram about his excitement to bring the story to life. "I'm so humbled and honored to be sharing this. Getting to tell David's story and to make him human is the most wonderful experience of my life."

House of David also stars Ali Suliman as King Saul; Ayelet Zurer as Queen Ahinoam, Saul's trusted wife; Stephen Lang (Avatar: The Way of Water, Don't Breathe) as Samuel the prophet, and Martyn Ford (The Sandman) as the feared Goliath.
